Destination: Cliff Walk, Newport RI

Looking for a cool spot to take your dog that you’ll both enjoy? If you love the ocean (and don’t mind a salty breeze in your hair), then the Cliff Walk in Newport, RI is a must. This 3.5-mile trail hugs the cliffs overlooking Easton Beach and offers a perfect blend of fresh air, stunning views, and exercise for both humans and pups. Parking is the only challenge. While street parking is limited, there is a large parking lot where you self pay. The cost is $35.

The beauty of the Cliff Walk is that you can make it your own adventure — stroll just a section, loop back to the main road, or go the full distance. Along the way you’ll find overlooks where you can pause to hear the crashing waves, watch seabirds, or simply take in the peacefulness of the Atlantic. If you’re lucky, you might even spot surfers carving through the waves below.

Yes, dogs are welcome — but they must stay on leash. You’ll see plenty of other pups out walking, and about halfway through there’s even a bathroom stop, water fountains for both people and dogs, and a few portable restrooms. The trail itself is relatively easy-going, with the bonus of historic mansions and private homes lining parts of the path. Personally, my eyes stayed glued to the waves — I love the ocean in all its forms: the feel, the salty air, the sound of laughter on the beach… (Sharks? Not so much — luckily, none of those.)

Keep in mind: during the summer season, dogs are not allowed on Newport’s beaches, which is pretty common for public beaches. But don’t let that stop you — the Cliff Walk alone is worth the trip, and the town of Newport adds so much more.

If you still have energy, after your walk, head to Thames Street, where you’ll find quaint shops, people-watching, and lots of dog-friendly restaurants. Picture sipping a frosty summer drink while your pup lounges at your side, boats cruising by and sailboats drifting past. Newport is wonderfully dog-welcoming, and it shows.

For Lunch, we decided to take a short 20-minute drive to Bristol, RI. We stopped at The Beach House, right on the water, with live acoustic music and an outdoor patio bar — pups are welcome here too. Bristol also features a bike and walking path (The Beach House in on the path) that runs all the way to East Providence. It’s clean, scenic, and perfect if you want to extend your adventure with more walking or cycling.

All in all, Newport and Bristol make for a perfect day trip with dogs: exercise, sights, food, and ocean views everywhere you look
